Do you hear it all the time???? “Oh I work 24/7, I’m too busy to do anything for myself” Truth be told you alone have set yourself up in that role, you have chosen to be “that busy” but at what cost? Are you healthy and fully engaged in your life?

I asked this question on social media, this week. “How do you take care of you?” and it was surprisingly silent……….Ghandi says that “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” Think about that for a moment….

“I’m too busy” is a noble excuse. “An excuse is worse and more terrible than a lie, for an excuse is a lie guarded.”——ouch——- thanks Pope John Paul II. Whatever it is you are too busy for, is not a priority in your life and you have accepted the status of “victimhood”. As business owners and those moving up the provervial ladder, it seems noble these days to “work every weekend, work 24/7, always available to my clients”. Here’s the thing folks, in our digitial age it almost impossible NOT to be working 24/7 so we must be intentional about taking time to care for ourselves.

How do we do that? I have several friends who have set up ways to invest in themselves.

I have a friend who sits out on her porch to work in the mornings so she can enjoy the quiet, gorgeous weather we are having. I have another friend who schedules her workouts each and every day so she can get her much needed endorphins. Another friend with school aged children wakes up at 5:30 so she can have quiet time with her coffee before the morning gets away from her.

I wake up at 5 (I know, gasp). I have an hour in the morning with my coffee, quiet time and I go over my goals and set up my day. Then after kids are out I head to the gym or for a run. I intentionally do not schedule early morning meetings so I am able to get my workout in. (I need those endorphins so I don’t feel crazy:)) All these disciplines are ways that I created to take care of myself each and every day.

The other piece of taking care of ourselves that is so important is developing and maintaining personal relationships. How do you cultivate and persist in healthy relationships with those closest to you?

We all network, we all meet people we enjoy throughout our daily journeys but we have close friends, family who are our “people” these are the people who we can count on no matter the circumstance or place. These are the people who at times become misplaced because we are so “busy” creating a business or more business or making sure every single client is happy. As we all know relationships take work. Relationships require time and at the end of the day if we have all the money in the world and don’t have friends, what does it matter? So, we can’t wait for opportunities to foster those relationships. We must consistently tend to them

So, how can you take care of yourself?

Here are 6 tips to help you create ways to take care of you

  1. Take Full Responsiblity for your “lack of time” and stop using it as an excuse
  2. Determine what “taking care of you” DAILY looks like for you? Is it quiet time, exercise, fun reading, taking a walk, conversation with your “person”, journaling.
  3. MAKE the time to take care of you each and every day. Whatever it is from #1 that you came up with, now you have to decide when in your day you are going to do this for yourself. I, myself would do the morning because if you wait until later in the day well……it won’t get done.
  4. EXERCISE – it gives you endorphins, it increases serotonin levels and over all makes you a happier, more productive person.
  5. Set appointments with your friends/family for a “date”. I have several dates throughout the month to make sure that I am maintaining a close relationship with the ones I love. My brother and I have a monthly lunch date. My best friends and I make one Sunday dinner together each month. Another dear friend of mine and I schedule a walk each Saturday morning. These are all booked on my calendar and I don’t schedule clients or allow other opportunities to interfere with these dates because I need these people to know how special they are to me and I need these relationships for my sanity and health.
  6. Schedule your week in advance. I use a passion planner which helps me measure, not only what I am doing to grow my business but what is important to me on a monthly, weekly and daily basis. Listen, I realize it isn’t sexy to schedule time with friends, spouses, etc. But it is absolutely necessary if relationships are important to you.
